Monday April, 5, 2015:
Sunny, warm, semi cloudy. Got the
birds out early and started with walkabouts with the falcons, and red-tailed
hawk. The Harris hawks are now saved for
when dining outside starts at 11:00. I
flew two at at time and they did well.
Keeping up with me and such. They
were starting to land a lot on the rails of the boardwalk. Some guests like it some are uncomfortable
with it. So, I try to discourage them
from landing there. I also flew at the
south condo area to make sure that the grackles there are also put on alert
that hawks are around the area.

Again out early, with few grackles around the pool areas. I again did walkabout with falcons and took
my one Harris hawk hooded on the T post for more control. It was a windy day so I wanted precise placement
of her. The advantage of this method is
getting the hawk in the most important area for effectiveness, and I can keep
her more focused when she is unhooded and released for flights. She did well. I then did single hawk flights the rest of
the day, due to the winds again. I make
sure I concentrated on the south condo area as the last part of my
patrols.

When I unloaded the truck, and back up in place. The brake pedal went to the floor. Oh boy.
I was really hoping for this to wait until next weeks scheduled brake
service. So, I moved my truck as little
as possible, drove in the lowest gear. Back to the parking lot. I also
saw a trail of brake fluid where I pumped the brakes for effectiveness. Loosing my brake fluid. I scheduled and moved up my brake service for
today/tomorrow. I then had the truck towed
to the local brake shop for servicing.
The only annoyance is the two cars that were parked at the bridge at the
narrowest point (across from where the
curb is painted yellow) where the tow truck could not pass through. Security (thank you Security) was alerted and
the cars were moved. I can barely get my
truck through that area when the cars are present So, I hope that the cars are
not parked there again. I flew the hawks that morning later, due to
the delay with my truck leaking brake fluid.
I flew one hawk, primarily the middle one in age and she is one who
stays up in the trees for me and flies well.
She then gets bored and I follow her back to the enclosures on the golf
cart. Half the time they fly right back
into their boxes. They are that
comfortable with them. After getting my
truck towed, the repair shop had an employee drive me back. Thank you.
I asked for and got a table to put the hawks on for the night right
outside the camper. I do not like them
on the ground, raccoons and other ground predators, plus fire ants can be a
real problem. I thank the head of the
surf school in brining a table down for me to keep the hawks safely off the
ground. I will sleep deeply tonight,
knowing my truck is being repaired.
